Django employs metaclasses primarily for two purposes: creating domain-specific languages (DSLs) for declarative code and implementing deprecation warnings to protect framework users from API changes.

The framework uses metaclasses for renaming deprecated methods with warnings, implementing custom type-checking behavior, associating assets with forms and widgets, and gathering field declarations from class attributes.

The ModelBase metaclass handles complex functionality including abstract models, inheritance patterns, and metadata management. The DeclarativeFieldsMetaclass collects field declarations from class definitions, while MediaDefiningClass processes asset associations.

Understanding them by simply reading the code is not incredibly difficult, and developers are encouraged not to dismiss metaclasses as overly complex.
