Power BI functions as a data visualization and business intelligence tool that transforms data from multiple sources into interactive dashboards and BI reports. The Power BI suite encompasses Power BI Desktop, Power BI Services (a SaaS solution), and mobile applications across various platforms. Users leverage the desktop application to create reports, while the SaaS service handles publishing, and mobile apps enable report viewing.
Visualizations serve as fundamental components of any BI tool, effectively presenting data to stakeholders. Power BI offers default visualization components ranging from simple bar and pie charts to complex models like waterfalls, funnels, and gauges.

Custom visuals are added through multiple methods: downloading .pbiviz files from Microsoft AppSource or accessing the integrated Office Store within Power BI Desktop. AppSource provides sample Power BI reports and video tutorials demonstrating custom visual implementation.
Unlike AppSource, the integrated custom visuals store organizes visuals into categories such as KPIs, Maps, and Advanced Analytics, simplifying browsing and comparison. This approach eliminates the need to manage files manually, allowing report authors to focus on development.
