Is Python Worth Learning? A Journey Back to the Beginning

Guido van Rossum created Python in late 1989 during his Christmas break, seeking to develop a programming language superior to ABC. He drew on his extensive experience with ABC while avoiding its limitations, designing a simple scripting language with strong fundamentals.

Van Rossum established foundational principles for Python: it would not enforce a single programming style, maximize code visibility, and be more expandable than ABC. These values shaped the language's philosophy, documented in The Zen of Python, which emphasizes principles like Beautiful is better than ugly and Simple is better than complex.

Python's development progressed through various research institutions and companies. The language moved from CWI in Amsterdam through CNRI and BeOpen.com before settling at Digital Creations, now the Zope Corporation.

The name Python reflects van Rossum's admiration for Monty Python's Flying Circus, chosen for its brevity and mysterious appeal rather than any connection to the serpent.

Python has achieved remarkable market success and adoption. It ranks as the second most profitable programming language in the US and places third in Poland with rising demand. According to StackOverflow research, 62.7% of developers consider it their favorite language. Major companies including Instagram, Dropbox, NASA, Spotify, YouTube, Yahoo, Nokia, and IBM utilize Python extensively.

The language's future appears exceptionally bright due to its efficiency, learnability, and critical applications in machine learning and blockchain technology.
