Best Practices for Network Infrastructure Management

Network Infrastructure Management (NIM) enables device communication and provides coherent results through connections. It encompasses both hardware and software systems, including routers, hubs, bridges, gateways, optical fibers, wireless access points, proxies, servers, ethernet, edge computing, VPN, firewalls, and optical amplifiers.

The significance of NIM lies in supporting cleaner and efficient operations. Strong network infrastructure reduces costs and improves work experiences. Organizations cannot achieve effectiveness with IT systems alone without robust networking foundations.

IT teams face multiple challenges in network infrastructure. These include decentralized hub structures that complicate monitoring, data quality issues where duplicate information creates inefficiencies, and the difficulty of routing appropriate data to suitable tools. Disconnectedness between cloud management branches creates scale inefficiencies. Security vulnerabilities pose significant risks when multiple devices interconnect.

Unaddressed infrastructure problems generate substantial costs—unnecessary expenses, revenue loss, customer dissatisfaction, and damaged brand reputation.

The Zero Trust Model, developed by Forrester in 2009, represents a security advancement. Rather than distinguishing between trusted and untrusted network segments, it emphasizes that all traffic requires rigorous monitoring, strict controls, and frequent inspections.

Recommended practices include implementing SSH key authentication instead of password-based logins, deploying robust firewall systems, applying regular updates for compliance, encrypting data with intelligent codes, maintaining backup procedures, conducting regular monitoring for suspicious activities, maintaining visibility of data for troubleshooting purposes, and tracking new alerts through scanners and access controls.
